The Hollydale Insane Asylum was built in 1888 as the southern campus of Rancho Los Amigos Hospital. The asylum served as a treatment facility for the homeless, the drunks and a treatment facility for those with influenza and eventually an Army base during World War II. In 2006 U.S. Marines who were using the facilities for exercise found a freezer with old remains.
